HELLO FROM REDDING

Hello from hot and sunny Redding California!

I had plans to give you some sweet posts this week but time got away from me! As you know, James is attending the Worship School at Bethel Church with other members from our worship team. They're really enjoying it. I checked it out yesterday morning (you can audit sessions) and had an amazing time. There's something incredibly special about worshipping Jesus in a room full of worship leaders. No holding back happens and that is a beautiful thing.

Today I hung out at home (the house we're staying at) and studied. I'm currently doing a distance education class from summit on the Holy Spirit. I tried studying outside but only lasted 30 minutes...ha. The neighbourhood we're staying in is a little sketchy..(not dangerous though!!) and it's just soooooo hot.

Bethel church last Sunday was amazing. Kris Vallotton spoke on empowering women in ministry...the last time I was at Bethel (which was my first time at Bethel) Sherry Silk spoke on women preaching...ha! I leaned over to James Sunday and said.. "God really loves me." ... I bought Kris' book, 'Fashioned to Reign' and I am so excited to tell you all about it!

Ok enough rambling from me...here are some pictures of the trip so far!

Looks fun hey? To see more pics follow me on instagram!

MY NANA'S 90TH BIRTHDAY

Not many people live to be 90. My nona (aka Nana Rosa or Nanny) is one of them. She is one of my biggest heroes. She immigrated to Canada in the 60s (?), and learned how to live in a foreign country. My grandfather died in the late 70s. I'm sad to have never met him. (But I have a really cool story where God gave Nana Rosa flowers on her 60th wedding anniversary). She still lives in the house she owns and she cooks every single day..oh and gardens too!! She makes THE BEST lasagna ever and gives the softest hugs. My heart swells when I think about her. I love her so much.

So last Saturday she turned 90!!! We celebrated in her backyard with a big ol family fete. There was laughter and LOTS of food. I mean A LOT OF FOOD. I'm still full. Enjoy the photos :)

Isn't Nana Rosa stunning?

Thank you Lord for grandmothers :)

Hope you have a marvellous Wednesday!

3 THINGS I'M TAKING AWAY FROM ALT SUMMIT

Yesterday you saw the photos and today I'm talking shop. But before all that jazz, I just wanted to give a HUUUGGGEEE thanks to Tan at Squirrelly Minds for letting me know all about Alt Summit and encouraging me to get my butt there. Honestly, I wouldn't have even considered it if she didn't tell me about it. She's also been an amazing blog mentor and she's just so real too. Courtney and I had a great time hanging and travelling from SLC to VIC with her (yay local Victoria bloggers!) So do yourself a favour friends and go check out her awesome blog! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING TAN!

Ok, so I learned ALOOOOOOOTTTTTT. I took a ton of notes and a ton of pictures of notes and a lot of mental notes. Let's just say there was ALOT of information. Awesome information. But a lot of it.

Here are a few things I learned-

  • There are a lot of young momma bloggers out there. Practically everyone I met had at least two kids and were under 30!! I guess we live life a lot slower out here on the West Coast.
  • Alt feeds you very well. I wasn't hungry once. They fed you almost every hour and that was AWESOME.
  • Martha Stewart doesn't age. And she usually just puts really, really, good butter into her pie crusts (sometimes she adds vinegar and sometimes she uses lard but mainly butter).

There were two main sessions (Oh Joy & Martha) and then a bunch of breakout sessions and parties at night. I went to as much as I could. I got something out of every session I attended (free leggings was the highlight of one lols) and I made a to-do list for things that came to my mind during the session (activator brain at work boys and girls). I could go on and on about everything I learned but instead I'll give you three things I'm taking away from Alt Summit.

1. CREATE BEAUTIFUL CONTENT

I have to admit, I haven't always had the greatest content. It's been hard to manage blogging. I don't blog full time. I have a full time job. I have a family (Coco counts as our child right?). I do school on the side. I like to run. I also like to see my friends. So sometimes, I've felt pressure to just get out a blog post for the sake of getting out a blog post. The more I post, the more readers I get but you know what? I've sacrificed the content on my site for the sake of getting more hits. I'm not ok with that.

I want to create beautiful content. I want to write meaningful words. But those things require time, something which I don't have a ton of. But I do have some of (time that is…oh gosh this sounds confusing, you're still following me right?) So I'm making a pledge dear friends, I'm pledging to create beautiful content and write meaningful words. This may mean that some weeks I'll only post a couple times. I'm not a full time blogger and I can't afford to try to be one. Something has got to give, and it won't be the content. But it's an exciting thing!! I'm excited to actually plan out beautiful content. I'm excited to write, write, write. It just won't be every single day.

I hope you'll still come back every single day though... and tell all of your friends to as well ;)

2. KEEP STEPPING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

As you know, going to Alt alone was stepping out of my comfort zone. I was a bit frightened, but I did it anyways and met some really rad people. Blogging requires me to step out of my comfort zone. Staying in the comfort zone limits me. If I want to influence more people and grow this blog (and cover the finances of it), I need to step out of my comfort zone!

Here are a few ways I'm stepping out of my comfort zone:

  • Reach out to brands I want to work with. (Sent my first pitch yesterday, and I'm planning on sending more!)
  • Talking to strangers about my blog. I talked to a TON of strangers at ALT and told them all about what I'm passionate about so why can't I tell strangers about it in town?
  • Continue to be a vulnerable and real voice. I don't want to get stuck in the "perfect pinterest" life. I will write through tough seasons. I will write through good seasons. I will be real and vulnerable.

3. REMEMBER THAT I'M NOT ALONE

One of my favourite things about Alt was meeting so many fabulous people who share one thing in common...BLOGGING! In Utah it seems like everyone and their dog has a blog while in Victoria it seems like the bloggers are few and far between. I so appreciate Tan and how she wrangles up the local bloggers for a Create/Curate (aka blogger meet up) every couple months. So want to know something so crazy? The first event at Alt is a sponsored dinner. I picked one that was a quick walk away from my hotel. I went there knowing no one. At some point in the dinner, we all go around and introduce ourselves and say where we're from and what we blog about. I say I'm from Victoria, BC, Canada and I hear someone chuckle...well a few people later and I find out another girl there was from Victoria, BC AND we went to the same elementary school and high school!!! INSANE! Her name is Adrienne and I'd let you know all about her blog but it's in the works so I'll let you know when she launches it (it's going to be AMAZING) We were also staying in the same hotel so it was super rad to have someone to go to the events with!

I also was so happy to meet two lovely ladies from the USA... Kristan from The Broken Bread and Annie from Annie Reeves. We connected so well and I'm looking forward to future collaborations with them! (In the meantime check out their blogs and tell them I sent you!)

So what I want to do is remind you that you're not alone! If you are even thinking of starting up a blog, let's connect!!! I want to do anything I can to encourage you and see you get started!

I learned A LOT of other things as well and I have a lot of little goals set up. I'm going to get a lot better at planning my posts and I now have an assistant aka friend who loves me to help me meet my goals! (THANK YOU COURTNEY!!!)

Thank you ALT SUMMIT for such a fantastic time. I learned so much and am so excited for ssheart's future!!

over n out,

s.s.♥︎.

ONE WORD 2014 // KIRSTEN

Before I left for Alt, I arranged for my friend Kirsten to share her one word for 2014. Kirsten and I work right beside each other at GT, so we know each other pretty well! Kirsten is an incredible women of God and it's so cool how we've been able to see each other grow in so many different ways over the past seven years of working beside each other! She's a fabulous writer too!!

In past years, usually around January, I’ve felt God place on my heart a single word meant as a theme or a goal for my year ahead. They usually came as strong, impressive words like “Brave” or “Opportunity”. This year, however, a much more subtle word for the months ahead didn’t find it’s way to me until mid-February.

Late one Friday night in February I wrote a blog post on my own blog (which currently needs much TLC!). It was a smattering of thoughts, really, centred on my maternal grandparents. Those thoughts tumbled out of me and I ended up with my word for the year…JOY.

I later used that blog post as a tribute to Grandmother and this word has continued to be my daily inspiration. I’d like to share that post & tribute with you.

-           -           -          -

This year on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, I was thinking of more than just candy hearts, or flowers, or chocolates.

I was thinking of a love story from my own ancestry.

I was thinking of a young soldier with red hair stationed in northern BC over 60 years ago and a feisty small-town girl, eight years his junior.

I was thinking of how he must have smiled at her, gazing through those beautiful hazel eyes and how her cheeks must have blushed.

I wondered how they spent their first Valentine's Day.

Perhaps a card or note was exchanged, or flowers or another gift.

Maybe a walk together, holding hands, talking of nothing or maybe planning their future together.

I don't know all of their stories, but I do know of a great love that began a legacy that continues in my own life.

A legacy of cherishing family.

A great love for God and others.

A fieriness and a spirit that is stubborn and strives to live and not let tragedy or difficult circumstances rule.

My grandparents showed me how to love.

They also showed me how to treat others.

They oozed God's love and proved that trusting God may not be easy, but it's worth letting go of the little things and letting God work through your life.

They showed me that no matter what background you came from or what hardships you face, you can surround yourself with sorrow or you can live another day and find joy. It is a choice.

They also taught me that we do not have to make this choice alone.

If we choose joy, God will bring it.

Maybe not in the exact way we asked, but He will reward us and lead us toward the joy He knows will enrich our lives and show others the way towards Him.

I was thinking of my Grandmother last Valentine’s Day, as she was surrounded by a few close family members and nurses and doctors in a hospital bed in the north.

I remembered.

And I thanked God, though I feel a stab of grief at the thought of her fading away.

She loved.

She is loved.

She will be forever loved by those who knew her.

She was always a thought ahead and always had a witty, cheeky word to say.

She was and is a woman like no other.

I am thinking of how I would like to live.

Like my grandparents lived.

Choosing joy.

Loving others.

Trusting God.

The day after Valentine’s Day my mom called me to tell me that my Grandma had passed away.

Now I know she is living in joy.

She is in her Heavenly Garden Paradise, smiling in the warm glow of God’s eternal love.

We may miss her, her spirit, her vivacity and her love. But we can let her live on…in us and through us in they way we live.

Like my Grandmother before me, though the future is unknown and the way is fraught with obstacles, today I choose joy.

-           -           -          -

My wonderful Grandmother had been through so much in her life; many deaths of close loved ones, heartaches, hardships, and struggles. Yet at her funeral service a theme emerged from all who spoke about her and her life and what she meant to them. She chose to lift her head, trust God and see the good in what lay before her.

We never heard her complain, even when she had a house full of almost 30 children and grandchildren ever summer. She put hours and hours into making us wonderful feasts and treats and had enough energy to stay up late to play cards or games with everyone. Many times, as life tossed her and her family on the tumultuous sea of loss she never gave up or gave in to despair.

I’m sure she worried often and I’m sure she felt stress but we never saw it. She was a strong Christian woman, always giving her cares to the Lord and leaning on the hope we have for tomorrow. She has been an inspiration to my entire family.

Even now, writing this, I can still see her sparkling eyes and sweet smile. She made that choice over and over, to choose joy over sadness, joy over pain, joy over depression, joy over anything else that would drag her down and keep her from experiencing life to the fullest.

Every day I am thinking about this choice. I am trying to see the good God has for me, to appreciate what I have and what He has given me and to choose joy over sorrow.

Daily making this choice has been difficult at times, as I’m sure my Grandma would attest to, but every day that I choose joy it seems to become a mite more easy.

I’m making an effort to change the way I live and my first step has been choosing JOY!

Wasn't that so beautiful? Thank you so much Kirsten for sharing! Your choice to choose joy has been so inspiring :)
